The Name / Cairn
Cairn.
A cairn is a stack of stones left standing on a mountain or a moor to mark the way. In fog, in storm, it shows the next step. KAIRN KYOTO took its name from it.
Wherever you are, there is a quiet hour to be spent with a whisky. We want to be the marker that brings you to it — by taking a single glass along for the journey.
Founder
I studied physics in graduate school and worked in experimental condensed matter research, then built a career as a mechanical design engineer. How a material behaves. How structure meets force. Design that can be reproduced. If it cannot be stated in numbers, I do not call it design.
Looking at the glass cases that already existed through that lens, I could not find one I was willing to accept.
As a student I joined a whisky society in its first year. From the night I first shared a dram with its president, my hours with a Glencairn began. That company has stayed with me into working life. In time I went to Scotland. At distilleries on Islay, at distilleries in the Highlands, I saw the tasting glass used as a matter of course. Some things you only learn on the ground.
I wanted to take that glass on the road.
With an engineer's eye and a whisky lover's hands, KAIRN KYOTO began.
Materials & Design
“Will this mature?”
One question governed every material. Canvas gains character the more it is used; leather grows deeper as it settles into the hand. Whisky changes slowly in the cask, and a tool, we thought, should do the same — grow alongside the person who carries it.
The brown of the canvas comes from the color of a sherry oak cask. The dark brown leather was chosen the way a blender marries different spirits: a material that would resonate with the canvas rather than repeat it.
Every fitting is die-cast zinc alloy. Plastic degrades. It does not mature. So we did not use it.
Durability is trust in a tool. Patina is respect for time.
