Which whisky glasses fit — measured

Will your glass fit? It is the first thing anyone asks, and capacity is no help in answering it.

Two glasses can hold the same 200 ml and only one of them will settle in. What decides it is the width of the mouth and the shape of the stem. So we stopped reasoning from volume and started measuring — one glass at a time, with a rule, in the case itself.

Millimetres throughout; 25.4 mm is one inch.

The interior was shaped around the Glencairn, and it settles in as if measured for it.

Every glass that fits measures 47 to 50 mm at the rim and 112 to 122 mm tall. The one that did not is 65 mm at the rim. We have not yet tried anything between those two figures — so if your glass falls in that gap, we cannot honestly tell you either way.

Glasses that did not fit

· Riedel Vinum Single Malt Whisky — rim ø65 mm
· Some long-stemmed copita glasses

Why 67 mm fits and 65 mm does not

Set those two numbers side by side and they look the wrong way round. The Toyo-Sasaki measures 67 mm across at its widest point, and it fits. The Riedel measures 65 mm across at the rim, and it does not.

The difference is where the width sits. A tasting glass tapers — it carries its widest point low, at the belly, and draws in towards the mouth. The case closes over the narrow part. A wide rim means the glass is still 65 mm across at the very top, with nothing left to close over. And a long stem simply makes the glass taller — the height of the case is fixed.

This is why we do not publish a single maximum diameter. One number cannot describe a shape.

The case's own numbers

Approx. 90 mm W × 150 mm H × 75 mm D (3.5 × 5.9 × 3.0 in.). Outer dimensions; each piece varies slightly. About 75 g for the case alone.

To carry two, there is the Twin Set — a pair made together.
